Previously the Bushi class of Dynasty Forge swords was said to have a “templated” hamon pattern, that is a strip of paper or cardboard was placed over the edge and the clay applied, thus creating an exact hamon pattern each time. The hamon pattern is a notare - midare mix in many areas, and has a few areas of toran which almost reach the shinogi-ji. Perhaps the only blades more similar to Nihonto in this regard are the folded steel stone polished blades and the tamahagane blades, both of which are also provided by Dynasty Forge. Indeed the hada is much more similar to a traditional Japanese nihonto than almost the entire Japanese sword productin market. This is in strict contrast to the folded steel class of Paul Chen swords that have an almost “damascus” like folded pattern that is visible even in very dim light. The appearence of the hada is subtle enough that you need a fairly bright source to clearly view it, but not so subtle as to be virtually invisible. The layering doesn’t show off the three different steels, it looks very much like any traditionally folded blade. This blade is a machine polished blade made from forge folding three different steels, 1060, 1080, and 1095. i was anxious to see the sword.) When all was said and done the sword I recieved beat my expectations.įirst up an overview. It took me about 7 minutes to take the whole thing apart (which is the “frustrating” part. Double boxed, and two layers of bubble wrap, one going directly around the sword and sword bag. When I got the package it was “frustratingly” packed. If you were interested in a folded steel "Little Crow" tachi, the Dynasty Forge model is nearly half the price as the Bugei Trading Company one. They are also very much affordably priced. They are very competively price when you compare them to not only Paul Chen's line of folded steel swords, but with Last Legend and Bugei Trading Company.ĭynasty Forge's folded steel line not only provides different blade lengths and bo hi options, but also carries o-katanas, kogarasu-maru zukuris, and even Nagamakis. This sword has instantly claimed its position as my favourite 'cutter' in my collection.Since the 1095 stone polished blades and others in the Dynasty Forge lineup usually get all the attention a far as publicity goes, I am doing a review of the forge folded line of blades. This sword has gone through every type of bottle I have put inįront of it with so little effort you might almost as well just beĮffortless cutting and surprising speed and recovery for a heavy solid bodied blade To quote another SBG member "It's a little tip-heavy, so I don't have the precision I'd like, but it's got good power, turns well and stops on a dime." Testing They will not suit people who like fast and precise blades. The only real difference is that this Dynasty Forge one basically just cuts BETTER.ĮDITORS NOTE: to clarify, the balance of the Musha and the Tenchi tend to be forward heavy and balanced towards the tip and are classified as heavy cutters. This sword handles very much like my Cheness Cutlery Tenchi, i.e. Some things, few things, require few words. In place I cannot move them a single millimetre or a fraction of one. But on the other hand, they are held so firmly My only single fault (if you could even call it a fault) that IĬould find is the two gold caps at the bottom of the tsuka ito don't Not so 'soft and fluffy' but ' hard, tight and grippy'Įxcellent wrapping quality, tight and even. This is cotton, then it is FAR superior to all of my other 'cotton' ito I am not in a position to argue with this, but I will say that if This katana has an 11" tsuka, personally I think this is a great size, as I find larger tsukas harder to handle.Įverywhere states that the ito is cotton. This is not only a beautiful polish, but it is also a very hard wearing polish. I have now used it to cut various plastic bottles, some Polishing by machine leads to a better looking kissaki and can be done in a fraction of time required for hand polishingĪt first, before cutting, I was worried about scratching this amazing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).Ultra Durable 'Beater' Katana under $400.Affordable Traditional Blades with 'Hamon'.
